Hearing Things

In short: How the story reaches every player. Narration and hints in The Possession are audio, in English, so teammates can pass on what a hard-of-hearing player misses; some clues need moderate reading, and one confident reader keeps a team moving.

Friday, 8.10 pm. For years I have logged voices from the house. Tonight I learned where some of them come from: the story and the hints in The Possession are played aloud, in English, into the room.

A team came out with a player who is hard of hearing. Her friends had passed on anything she missed, and she had spotted most of what they missed. Staff say the puzzles call on all sorts of abilities, and she proved it. She asked whether my meter hears ghosts. I said it hears something. She said, ‘So do I. Mostly my brother.’

Two of the team were visiting from overseas, with some English but not a great deal. Staff say a little reading is needed and a confident reader helps. The team had one, and she read aloud for everybody.

I asked whether the voices in the house had frightened them. One said it was the silences. I have started recording silences. It is harder than it sounds.

FAQ

What this file answers

Can a player who is hard of hearing follow The Possession?

Yes, with teammates passing on the sound cues. Story narration and the hint system in The Possession are audio, so the group fills in anything missed; Escape This says it shouldn’t spoil the night because the puzzles call on all sorts of abilities.

Do all of us need strong English for The Possession?

No, but most of the team should be comfortable with it. The Possession’s narration and hints are spoken in English and some clues need moderate reading, so a confident reader keeps things moving and a mostly fluent group gets the most from the story.
