Before the door shuts again

One story, three houses, three sets of access details. Here’s what each city’s Possession asks of you.

In short: Before The Possession: arrive 15 minutes early, lock away phones, and bring ID if you look under 15. Expect smoke, darkness and jump scares. Sydney and Melbourne take one wheelchair; Northbridge doesn’t. Only Melbourne’s version involves crawling.

Timing

Allow about 90 minutes

  • Be there 15 minutes before your session for lockers and the briefing.
  • Sixty minutes inside the house.
  • Leave 15 minutes afterwards to settle your nerves and debrief.
  • Friday and Saturday nights go quickly, so book ahead.
Bring & leave

What to bring, what to leave

  • A licence or student card if anyone in the team looks younger than 15.
  • Closed shoes and clothes you can move in (and crawl in, in Melbourne).
  • A costume, if your team is game.
  • Leave recording gear behind: phones and watches can’t come inside.
Northbridge · Lake Street, Perth

Age rules

  • Every player must be at least 15. Younger children can’t play, even alongside a parent.
  • Children can’t come in to watch either.
  • Staff may check ID for anyone who looks under 15.
Northbridge · Lake Street, Perth

Accessibility

The Northbridge Possession isn’t wheelchair accessible. It does have no crawling and no tight spaces, so Escape This lists it as suitable during pregnancy, for limited mobility and for claustrophobic players. For a wheelchair user, ask the team to recommend an accessible room, or book The Possession in Sydney or Melbourne.

Sydney CBD · George Street

Age rules

  • Every player must be at least 15. Younger children can’t play, even alongside a parent.
  • Children can’t come in to watch either.
  • Staff may check ID for anyone who looks under 15.
Sydney CBD · George Street

Accessibility

Sydney’s Possession is wheelchair accessible and fits one wheelchair per session. A few puzzles are trickier to reach from a seated position, which the rest of the team can pick up. There’s no crawling and nothing tight to squeeze through.

Melbourne CBD · Collins Street

Age rules

  • Every player must be at least 15. Younger children can’t play, even alongside a parent.
  • Children can’t come in to watch either.
  • Staff may check ID for anyone who looks under 15.
  • Escape This’s booking system sets the Melbourne room at 15+, but its Melbourne web page still says 16+ in places. If a 15-year-old is coming, phone the venue first.
Melbourne CBD · Collins Street

Accessibility

Melbourne’s Possession takes one wheelchair per session, but depending on the size of the mobility aid one or more chambers may not be reachable. Unlike Perth and Sydney, this build includes crawling or tight spaces, so it may not suit pregnant players, limited mobility or severe claustrophobia. Talk to the team before you book.

Health & safety

Rules of the house

  • Should the house get too much, a panic button in each room brings a gamesmaster to walk that player out.
  • Gamesmasters keep watch over the whole game on CCTV.
  • Anyone affected by alcohol or drugs is refused entry, no exceptions.
  • Phones, smart watches, cameras and recorders are locked away before you go in.
  • No crawling and no tight squeezes in the Northbridge house, which makes it a fair choice during pregnancy or with limited mobility.
  • The rooms are not wheelchair accessible; the team can steer you to an accessible room instead.
  • Theatrical smoke drifts through the house and may not suit asthma or other breathing conditions.
  • Expect stretches of total darkness, flashing light and jump scares.
  • Strong adult themes throughout. Every player must be 15 or older, and staff can ask for ID.
  • Your session is private; no strangers are ever added to your team.
FAQ

Before the door shuts again

Is The Possession scarier than The Haunting?

That’s how Escape This pitches it. The studio says The Possession “ups the ante on horror” and bills it as the most terrifying escape room experience in Australia, which is its own claim rather than an independent ranking. Expect strong adult themes, jump scares, total darkness, flashing light and some gory touches.

How much time does a night at The Possession take?

Around 90 minutes from start to finish. The Possession gives you 60 minutes inside; Escape This asks teams to arrive 15 minutes early and suggests leaving another 15 afterwards to get your breath back and debrief.

Is The Possession strictly 15-plus?

Yes. Escape This’s booking system sets The Possession at 15 and over in Northbridge, Sydney CBD and Melbourne CBD, staff may ask for ID, and children aren’t allowed in to watch. The old room site once called it adults-only; 15+ is the current rule.

Will Melbourne let a 15-year-old into The Possession?

According to Escape This’s booking system, yes: The Possession in Melbourne CBD is set at 15+, like Perth and Sydney. Parts of the Melbourne room page still say 16 and over, though, so ring the Collins Street team on (03) 7078 8118 and have them confirm a 15-year-old will be let in.

Do all of us need strong English for The Possession?

No, but most of the team should be comfortable with it. The Possession’s narration and hints are spoken in English and some clues need moderate reading, so a confident reader keeps things moving and a mostly fluent group gets the most from the story.

Which Possession venues can take a wheelchair?

Sydney CBD and Melbourne CBD, one wheelchair per session at each. Some puzzles are harder to reach seated, and in Melbourne one or more chambers may be out of reach depending on the mobility aid. The Possession at Northbridge isn’t wheelchair accessible, and the team there can suggest an accessible room instead.

Which Possession house makes you crawl?

Only in Melbourne. Escape This says The Possession at Melbourne CBD involves crawling or tight spaces, which may not suit pregnant players, people with limited mobility or severe claustrophobia. The Northbridge and Sydney CBD builds have no crawling and no tight spaces.

I’m pregnant. Which Possession should I book?

Northbridge or Sydney CBD. Escape This lists both versions of The Possession as free of crawling and tight spaces and a good choice during pregnancy or with mobility difficulties. Melbourne’s version includes crawling, so skip that one. Theatrical smoke is used at all three, so raise any breathing concerns when you book.

Will the haze in The Possession bother my asthma?

It might. All three versions of The Possession use theatrical smoke, and Escape This warns it may not suit people with asthma or other respiratory conditions. Call the venue before booking if that applies to anyone in your team.

How dark does it get inside The Possession?

Pitch black at times. The Possession uses controlled lighting with spells of complete darkness and flashes of light, and the Melbourne page says it isn’t recommended for anyone with light sensitivity or epilepsy. Jump scares come with the territory too.

Is The Possession a problem for claustrophobic players?

It depends on the city. Escape This describes the Northbridge and Sydney CBD versions of The Possession as a good choice for claustrophobic players, while warning that confined moments are possible in any room. Melbourne’s version has crawling or tight spaces and isn’t advised for severe claustrophobia.

Can a player who is hard of hearing follow The Possession?

Yes, with teammates passing on the sound cues. Story narration and the hint system in The Possession are audio, so the group fills in anything missed; Escape This says it shouldn’t spoil the night because the puzzles call on all sorts of abilities.

Can we turn up to The Possession in costume?

Yes, and plenty of teams do. For The Possession, think ghost hunters, exorcists or shaken survivors of the first visit, but wear closed shoes and something easy to move in. In Melbourne, choose clothes you don’t mind crawling in.

How do the three versions of The Possession differ?

Same story and rating, different builds. Northbridge is the original, with no wheelchair access and no crawling. Sydney CBD takes one wheelchair and has no crawling. Melbourne CBD takes one wheelchair but adds crawling and tight spaces, and prices by peak and off-peak sessions rather than weekdays and weekends. Escape rates differ a lot between them, too.
