Case Opened: 48 Lake Street

In short: The investigator’s file begins. The Possession shares a heritage Lake Street building with The Haunting; Escape This bills it as inspired by the building’s true history, and phones, watches, cameras and recorders go in lockers before play.

Friday, 7.50 pm. File opened. Subject: 48 Lake Street, Northbridge. A heritage building more than a century old, which the locals discuss in low voices and the staff discuss in a cheerful sort of sales voice. I find the second more sinister.

Readings from the footpath opposite were remarkable. The meter registered activity at an upstairs window, a rubbish bin and a seagull. I am treating the seagull as a person of interest.

9.02 pm. Presented myself at the front desk with full equipment. Informed that nothing which records, films or beeps may go past the lockers. Not my meter, not my camera, not even my wristwatch, which does not beep but which they said might. I was offered a locker and a key. I declined both. A man must have principles.

10.40 pm. Observed a small figure at the upstairs window. It appeared to wave. I have written ‘wave (?)’ in the margin and underlined it three times.

Noreen collected me at midnight and asked whether I had found anything. I said yes. She asked what. I said the seagull. She has asked me not to bring up the seagull at Sunday lunch.

FAQ

What this file answers

How much of The Possession’s ‘true history’ is real?

Escape This bills The Possession as based on a real haunted house and inspired by its true history, and its old room site pointed to the deaths recorded in the Northbridge building. The game itself is a scripted horror story, so take the ‘true history’ as atmosphere rather than a documentary.
